Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

A Comfortable, Secure Fit for Your Dentures

Pre-prosthetic surgery prepares a patient’s mouth for dentures or other prosthetic devices. While many people can receive dentures without undergoing pre-prosthetic surgery procedures, some patients have a jaw shape that makes a comfortable and secure fit for a denture very difficult.

Our oral surgeons are highly trained in pre-prosthetic surgery techniques to help our patients achieve a secure denture fit. We offer these procedures in the comfort of our surgical suites in Avon, Glastonbury, and Enfield, CT.

Benefits of Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

The alveolar ridge is the bone under our gums that holds our teeth in place. Genetics, tooth loss, and other factors can all affect the condition of the alveolar ridge. If a patient finds that their dentures do not feel comfortable in their mouth, even after multiple fittings, the alveolar ridge may require surgical correction. Pre-prosthetic surgery provides patients with many benefits, including:

  • Drastically improve the comfort of your dentures
  • Preserve or improve jaw structure
  • Eliminate pain and sores caused by ill-fitting dentures

Types of Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

The shape of your jaw/alveolar ridge and the type of prosthesis you have or will be receiving will largely determine what pre-prosthetic procedures you will receive. During your first visit, you will meet with one of our oral surgeons to discuss your oral health goals. We will take 3D scans of your mouth to get a closer look at your bone and facial structure.

As oral surgeons, we are qualified to safely administer all forms of anesthesia and sedation. We will discuss your options prior to any procedure and help you choose the right option for your anxiety levels or overall procedure complexity.

The most common procedures we offer to prepare patients for dentures and other prosthetic devices include:

  • Alveolar ridge reduction
  • Bone smoothing or reshaping
  • Removal of tori (bony growths in the upper or lower jaws) or bony exostoses (benign bone growths)
  • Removal of excess soft (gum) tissue
  • Soft tissue or bone grafting procedures

Pre-prosthetic procedures tend to be quick and minor, with very few risks, and many times they can be performed from the comfort of our offices located in Avon, Glastonbury, and Enfield, CT.

Our office proudly offers EXPAREL®, the safe and long-lasting pain management option. It provides comfort following surgery and reduces or eliminates the need for narcotic medication. Learn more about EXPAREL.
