Pre-prosthetic surgery prepares a patient’s mouth for dentures or other prosthetic devices. While many people can receive dentures without undergoing pre-prosthetic surgery procedures, some patients have a jaw shape that makes a comfortable and secure fit for a denture very difficult. Our oral surgeons are highly trained in pre-prosthetic surgery techniques to help our patients achieve a secure denture fit, and we offer these procedures in the comfort of our surgical suites located in Avon, Glastonbury, and Enfield, CT.
Why have pre-prosthetic surgery?
The alveolar ridge is the bone under our gums that holds our teeth in place. Genetics, tooth loss, and other factors can all affect the condition of the alveolar ridge. If a patient finds that their dentures do not feel comfortable in their mouth, even after multiple fittings, it may be that their alveolar ridge or jaw shape needs surgical correction, or other correctable oral inconsistencies are preventing a comfortable denture placement. In this case, pre-prosthetic surgery may be recommended to provide an improved denture fit as well as better functionality and a more natural-looking smile.
Types of Pre-Prosthetic Surgery
The shape of your jaw/alveolar ridge and the type of prosthesis you have or will be receiving will largely determine what pre-prosthetic procedures you will receive. Below are a few of the most common procedures we offer to prepare patients for dentures and other prosthetic devices:
- Alveolar ridge reduction
- Bone smoothing or reshaping
- Removal of tori (bony growths in the upper or lower jaws) or bony exostoses (benign bone growths)
- Removal of excess soft (gum) tissue
- Bone or tissue grafting procedures
Pre-prosthetic procedures tend to be quick and minor, with very few risks, and many times they can be performed from the comfort of our offices located in Avon, Glastonbury, and Enfield.
If your dentures are giving you trouble and you think you may require a pre-prosthetic procedure, or if you are looking into other tooth replacement options such as dental implants, feel free to give Avon Oral, Facial and Dental Implant Surgery a call.
