Wisdom Teeth Removal: When is it Necessary?

September 12, 2025

At Avon Oral, Facial and Dental Implant Surgery, we see many patients from Avon, Enfield, Glastonbury, and across Connecticut with questions about wisdom teeth removal. It’s a common procedure but knowing when it’s necessary can help you or your child avoid future complications.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, often erupt in the late teens or early twenties. While some people have enough room for them, many do not. If your mouth is too small, wisdom teeth can become impacted (trapped beneath the gums), grow in at an angle, or crowd nearby teeth. This can lead to pain, infection, cysts, or damage to surrounding teeth.

We typically recommend removal when we see signs of:

  • Pain or swelling in the back of the mouth
  • Difficulty opening the jaw
  • Infections or gum inflammation
  • X-ray evidence of crowding or impaction

Often, it’s best to remove wisdom teeth before they cause symptoms. That’s why early evaluation—typically during the teenage years—is key.

Preparing for Wisdom Teeth Removal

We begin with a thorough consultation, including imaging, to assess the position of the wisdom teeth and your overall oral health. Our team walks you through every step, so you feel informed and comfortable.

Before the procedure, we’ll provide detailed instructions about what to eat, drink, and how to prepare. Sedation options are available to ensure a smooth experience.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most patients recover within a few days. After surgery, you’ll need rest, soft food, and very careful oral hygiene. We’ll give you a clear aftercare guide to promote healing and avoid dry sockets or infection. Mild swelling and discomfort are normal and easily managed with medication and cold compresses.

What Happens If You Don’t Remove Your Wisdom Teeth?

If your wisdom teeth don’t have enough room to grow properly and aren’t removed, you may face chronic pain, infections, shifting teeth, or damage to nearby molars. In some cases, cysts or tumors can form around impacted teeth, leading to more complex surgical needs. Preventative removal often reduces the risk of these complications.
